Physiol Genomics 40: 34 –47, 2009. First published October 6, 2009; doi:10.1152/physiolgenomics.00115.2009.—Higher fat and lower carbohydrate and amino acid oxidation are observed in women compared with men during endurance exercise. We hypothesized that the observed sex difference is due to estrogen and that menstrual cycle phase or supplementation of men with 17 -estradiol (E2) would coordinately influence the mRNA content of genes involved in lipid and/or carbohydrate metabolism in skeletal muscle. Twelve men and twelve women had muscle biopsies taken before and immediately after 90 min of cycling at 65% peak oxygen consumption (V̇O2peak). Women were studied in the midfollicular (Fol) and midluteal (Lut) phases, and men were studied after 8 days of E2 or placebo supplementation. Targeted RT-PCR was used to compare mRNA content for genes involved in transcriptional regulation and lipid, carbohydrate, and amino acid metabolism. Sex was the greatest predictor of substrate metabolism gene content. Sex affected the mRNA content of FATm, FABPc, SREBP-1c, mtGPAT, PPAR , PPAR , CPTI, TFP, GLUT4, HKII, PFK, and BCOADK (P 0.05). E2 administration significantly (P 0.05) affected the mRNA content of PGC-1 , PPAR , PPAR , TFP, CPTI, SREBP-1c, mtGPAT, GLUT4, GS-1, and AST. Acute exercise increased the mRNA abundance for PGC-1 , HSL, FABPc, CPTI, GLUT4, HKII, and AST (P 0.05). Menstrual cycle had a small effect on PPAR , GP, and glycogenin mRNA content. Overall, women have greater mRNA content for several genes involved in lipid metabolism, which is partially due to an effect of E2.

متن کاملSkeletal Muscle Estrogen Receptor Activation in Response to Eccentric Exercise Up-Regulates Myogenic-Related Gene Expression Independent of Differing Serum Estradiol Levels Occurring during the Human Menstrual Cycle.
This study sought to determine if the differences in serum estradiol we have previously observed to occur during the mid-follicular (MF) and mid-luteal (ML) phases of the female menstrual cycle could be attributed to estrogen-induced receptor activation and subsequent effects on myogenic-related genes which may otherwise impact muscle regeneration in response to eccentric exercise. Twenty-two p...

BACKGROUND: ß -estradiol is a steroid sex hormone that plays important role in oral physiology. The aim of this study was to determin the association of the menstrual cycle and salivary ß-estradiol with the production of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC).METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, twenty female dental students in good oral and general health were recruited for evaluation of VSC, sali...

STEPHEN M. ROTH, RICHARD GAJDOSIK AND BRENT C. RUBY. Effects Of Circulating Estradiol On Exercise-Induced Creatine Kinase Activity. JEPonline. 2001;4(2):10-17. The present investigation sought to determine the effects of circulating estradiol (E2) and oral contraceptive use on serum creatine kinase (CK) activity following acute eccentric exercise. Ten college-aged female subjects were grouped a...
متن کاملNo effect of menstrual cycle on myofibrillar and connective tissue protein synthesis in contracting skeletal muscle.
We tested the hypothesis that acute exercise would stimulate synthesis of myofibrillar protein and intramuscular collagen in women and that the phase of the menstrual cycle at which the exercise took place would influence the extent of the change. Fifteen young, healthy female subjects were studied in the follicular (FP, n=8) or the luteal phase (LP, n=7, n=1 out of phase) 24 h after an acute b...
